10 Years of saving lives-The National VTE Prevention Programme in England

This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the launch of the National VTE Prevention Programme in England.  The programme has driven rapid and widespread implementation of safe and effective VTE prevention care across the country.  Over a decade ago, VTE was something of a Cinderella issue, with little awareness that many events associated with hospitalisation were potentially preventable.  We now have an enlightened, systematic approach to VTE Prevention across the country that has undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented much morbidity.  This is supported by NHS Digital data, which shows that deaths from hospital associated VTE, have reduced by 15.3% since 2007.

The future is about building on our success by learning even more about hospital associated thrombosis through the GIRFT VTE survey, continuing to ensure exemplary VTE prevention practice is commonplace and educating the public about VTE to ensure swift diagnosis in those we cannot prevent.
